Disney has announced that it will begin offering a new subscription option for Disney+ in the US later this year.

The new tier will be priced lower than the current $7.99 a month charge but subscribers will have to watch non-skippable adverts around content on the service.

The move is designed to bring in new customers for whom the current price is too much and will form a key part of Disney's ambition to reach 230 million to 260 million subscribers worldwide by 2024.

After launching in the US, the new subscription model will roll out internationally - including in the UK - throughout 2023.

"Expanding access to Disney+ to a broader audience at a lower price point is a win for everyone - consumers, advertisers, and our storytellers," said Kareem Daniel, chairman of Disney Media.

"More consumers will be able to access our amazing content. Advertisers will be able to reach a wider audience, and our storytellers will be able to share their incredible work with more fans and families."

A price point for the new subscription tier has yet to be confirmed. body check tags ::
