Disney+ exceeded predictions by over 40% to reach over 152 million worldwide subscribers in the second quarter of the year, Disney has announced.

Despite a cost of living crisis escalating in most countries around the globe, the streaming service added 14.4 million new subscribers between April and June, taking the total as of July 2 to 152.1 million.

Analysts had been predicting net additions of around 10 million over the period.

The news comes after rivals Netflix and discovery+ both reported subscriber losses in 2022 due to a mixture of price rises and consumer cutbacks amid the economic uncertainty.

Most of Disney+'s growth came from the Disney+ Hotstar service - a cheaper version available in India and South-East Asia - with 8.3 million additions, while subscribers in the US and Canada were up a very modest 100,000.

Addressing investors, the company said that it expected subscriptions to "accelerate modestly" in the third quarter. body check tags ::
