Disney has announced that the worldwide subscriber base for Disney+ has now passed 103.6 million.

The streaming service reached the 100 million milestone in early March but that number had grown further to 103.6 million by April 3 - a rise of 8.7 million since the start of the year.

Despite recent price rises in several markets, the average monthly revenue per user of Disney+ stands at $3.99, down from $5.63 a year ago. The company explained that the figures include the Disney+ Hotstar service in India, where subscribers pay significantly less for access.

The overall rise in revenue from an expanding subscriber base was offset mainly by a huge increase in programming costs, with major new series from Marvel and the Star Wars franchise having entered production over the last 12 months.

Disney now projects that Disney+ will have between 230 million and 260 subscribers by September 2024, around four times greater than its pre-launch estimates.
