The Isle of Man government is hopeful of securing agreement with the BBC to produce a weekly half-hour news programme for the island.

The nation - located in the Irish Sea between Great Britain and the island of Ireland with a population circa 83,000 - is an independently-governed state but has the status of Crown Dependency, with the UK responsible for its defence.

The Isle of Man does not have its own TV stations and instead inhabitants access UK services, receiving the England North West variants of the BBC and ITV.

The island's government has been negotiating with the BBC for around 18 months over the potential provision of a local service, and according to BBC News, talks are now centred around a once-weekly half-hour news show which would be delivered online.

A BBC spokesman said: "We are currently exploring a number of options to strengthen our coverage of the Isle of Man and we will share our plans when this work is complete."

Although the Isle of Man does not have any local TV stations, it does have a dedicated radio station, Manx Radio. body check tags ::
