The BBC is reportedly contemplating plans to expand Breakfast and News at One as part of a shakeup of BBC One's daytime schedule.

Breakfast - the most-watched breakfast programme on UK TV - currently airs between 6am and 9.15am from Monday to Friday, while the 1pm news bulletin airs for half an hour and draws at least 2 million viewers every day.

According to The Times, the new proposals would see the One team move to join Breakfast in Manchester, with resources being shared between both teams.

The One would be doubled in length to an hour, while Breakfast would most likely run until 10am.

"The One was produced by the same team as the daytime News channel but since they cut that team it has been running on fumes and has been rehashing breakfast packages and local TV," a source told the newspaper.

"Partnering it with Breakfast will free it up to do more things such as organise stories that work for both lunchtime and morning audiences.

"The 1pm show is a lot like Breakfast - people see it as lesser because the audience is older, female and working-class and it gets fobbed off - but audience-wise it's big."

The move would also likely be a cost-cutting one for BBC One, with more than six hours of other daytime programming being axed to make way for the expanded programmes. body check tags ::
