The BBC News channel has dropped its nightly newspaper review show The Papers ahead of major changes to the station later this year.

The programme, which is usually broadcast at 10.30pm and 11.30pm on weekday evenings, features a host and two guests looking ahead to the big stories featuring in the following day's newspapers.

As part of cost-cutting measures, the corporation is merging the UK-focused BBC News channel with the international BBC World News channel into a single service in April.

Explaining the decision to ditch The Papers, a BBC statement said: "As part of these changes there will be some scheduling changes and some items may move, or be provided in different ways across the BBC channels.

"From 3 January The Papers will no longer run as a regular segment on BBC News, and instead we will continue to feature paper reviews and stories throughout BBC programmes including BBC Breakfast, The Today Programme, Politics Live, Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg and BBC News Online.

"We think it is important to feature newspapers and will also continue to invite editors and journalists from across the industry to discuss the news and important issues of the day across the BBC channels."

Sky News continues to broadcast its Press Preview show nightly at 10.30pm and 11.30pm, while GB News offers a comic take on the papers in Headliners in the 11pm hour.
